ANAHEIM — In the three most emotional innings of the season, the Angels received two home runs from rookie Christian Moore, all while Zach Neto departed with an injury.

Moore’s second home run of the game ended a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings. It was just two innings after he tied the score by going deep. In between, Neto’s shoulder injury in the ninth still hung over the proceedings.

The heroics were so unexpected, even Moore himself was unsure it even happened. He sprinted around the bases with a dive into third not knowing his line drive to right-center had cleared the wall.

“I didn’t believe it,” Moore said as third-base umpire Chris Segal gave the home run signal. “I was kind of scared to get off the base, but the umpire was pretty serious that it was a home run. So I was, ‘Alright, I’m going to take your word for it and go celebrate with my boys.’”

As of mid-May, Moore was taking his final exams at Tennessee. One year ago, he was helping the Volunteers to the College World Series title. On Tuesday, he helped the Angels find success after the offense struggled against another Tennessee alum in Red Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet.

“I think I saw it on Twitter that a year ago today, we won at Omaha,” Moore said. “So it means the world to me to be here in this situation in a full complete circle. I’m just blessed to be here. The Angels saw something in me in last year’s draft, and they continue to see something in me. And I’m going to keep going out there and try to win games.”

The game-winner came after the Red Sox took a 2-1 lead in the 10th when Marcelo Mayer’s single scored automatic runner Ceddanne Rafaela with left-hander Reid Detmers on the mound.

Neto departed with a right shoulder injury after he bobbled a Romy Gonzalez grounder then fired a weak throw to first base over the head of LaMonte Wade Jr.

With hands on knees at the edge of the infield dirt after the play, Neto was visited by a member of the team’s medical staff before walking off the field. A half-inning earlier, the injury occurred when Neto made the last out on a dive while trying to steal second base as the winning run with Mike Trout at the plate.

The injury happened in a strikingly similar fashion to his dive into second late last season that led to offseason shoulder surgery and delayed his start to this season by three weeks.

“We’ll see what happens,” interim manager Ray Montgomery said. “I don’t have any information at this point other than we weren’t going to let him go out there after that.”

From the top of the order to the bottom, from the veterans of the bunch to the young, it had been the same miserable story all night for the Angels against Crochet.

One night after they collected 11 walks to ignite a 9-5 victory, the Angels added three more walks against Crochet in seven innings but just three hits, while striking out 10 times.

Without Nolan Schanuel, who was given some time off his feet, the Angels’ adjusted top three of Neto, Luis Rengifo and Mike Trout went 2 for 11. The bottom four was in its own slumber until Moore rode to the rescue.

None of the offensive struggles were surprising against Crochet, the American League strikeout leader, who added double digits onto the pile Tuesday. Six Angels players struck out two times each. Red Sox pitchers combined for 15 total strikeouts.

The victory came as the Angels received yet another standout performance from the bullpen as Connor Brogdon, Hunter Strickland, Sam Bachman and Kenley Jansen combined to go 4⅓ scoreless innings. Detmers (3-2) even rebounded after his first pitch allowed the tying run to score.

Jansen was pitching one day after he departed in the ninth inning because of a cramp in his pectoral muscle.

“The bullpen, you can’t say enough about what they did,” Montgomery said.

It came as left-hander Tyler Anderson had a short night, allowing one run over 4⅔ innings, while Montgomery elected to turn the game over to the bullpen with the Red Sox about to start their third time through the batting order.

“Obviously as a starter, you want to go deeper into games there, but man, our bullpen has just been unbelievable, so kudos to those guys for coming in, shutting it down and keeping it there,” Anderson said.

The plan gave the Angels a chance, all while Crochet had other ideas. The Red Sox starter delivered an outing of three runs or less for the 10th time in his last 11 outings, while going at least six scoreless innings for the third time this season.

“I don’t want to say (Crochet) is a former teammate of mine because I never got a chance to play with him, but he is a UT alum so I got to be around him a lot this offseason,” Moore said. “So I know the type of person he is and how hard he works. That guy is good. He did his thing tonight.”

The Angels are now 4-1 against the Red Sox this season and clinched their second series victory over Boston in two tries this month.

Now that the mostly young lineup has faced one of the AL’s best, it is up to them to use that experience to get after the rest the league has to offer.

“I think (Moore) has that youthful exuberance,” Montgomery said. “It’s refreshing in one sense because there is so much energy there. We talked about some of the things that go on and at one point he’s like, ‘Man, I don’t think I’d ever want your job.’ And I said, ‘I’d like to have yours again.’”

It was reflected (Monday) that if you get that many walks, you should put some runs on the board.”

More to come on this story.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former journalist Lauren Sanchez are set to tie the knot in Italy this week, even as local frustrations mount over the multi-million dollar event.

Here’s what to know about the three-day wedding celebration, as well as the protests unfolding in the background.

Where and when is the wedding?

Bezos, 61, and Sanchez’s wedding extravaganza kicks off in Venice this Thursday, with the ceremony scheduled to take place Saturday at an undisclosed location.

The nuptials will mark Bezos’ second marriage, after his first marriage to philanthropist Mackenzie Scott ended in 2019. Sanchez, 55, was previously married to Patrick Whitesell, the executive chair of talent firm Endeavor, with their marriage also ending in 2019.

The wedding ceremony is likely to be held on San Giorgio Maggiore, according to CNN. One of the islands that make up Venice, San Giorgio Maggiore is known for the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in the 1500s.

A protest group called “No Space for Bezos” declared victory this week, saying that the couple has moved their planned post-wedding party on June 28 to a shipyard on the outskirts of Venice rather than the 14th-century Grande Scuola Misericordia in central Venice, CNN reported.

How much will the Bezos-Sanchez wedding cost?

The three-day event could cost between about $64 million to $76 million, Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto regional government that comprises Venice, told reporters on Tuesday, according to The Globe and Mail.

About 80% of the wedding provisions will be sourced from Venetian vendors, the Associated Press reported, citing people close to the couple. These products include locally made pastries and hand-blown glass from Murano, an island known for its long history of glassmaking.

Bezos has a net worth of $230 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. That ranks him No. 3 on the index’s list of the world’s richest people, after Mark Zuckerberg ($246 billion) and Elon Musk ($385 billion)

Who is attending?

Bezos and Sanchez invited about 200 guests to celebrate with them in the Italian city, according to media reports. The event is expected to draw plenty of star power, with guests said to include Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom and President Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump.

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, at least 95 private planes have requested permission to land at Venice’s Marco Polo airport.

Who is Lauren Sanchez?

Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder and owner of The Washington Post, is marrying Lauren Sanchez, a former journalist turned children’s book author. The couple went public with their relationship in 2019 and became engaged in 2023.

Sanchez recently participated in Blue Origin’s first all-women’s space flight, which included “CBS Mornings” anchor Gayle King and singer-songwriter Katy Perry. A licensed pilot, Sanchez pitched the idea for a female-led flight to Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, shortly after he completed his own trip to space in 2021.

Sanchez’s bachelorette party in Paris last month included Perry, Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Eva Longoria, according to AFP.

What are the wedding protests about?

Some Venice locals are expressing frustration over the city’s decision to welcome wealthy tourists while failing to meet residents’ needs.

This comes amid a broader pushback against tourism in parts of Europe. Last week, protestors gathered in Venice and other popular European destinations to protest a flood of visitors, who some critics blame for driving up housing costs and pushing out local residents. For the second year, Venice is requiring people visiting the city for a day to pay a tax to enter on certain summer dates.

Among those protesting the wedding are the organizers of the “No Space for Bezos” campaign, which has the backing of a dozen different local organizations including housing advocates and university groups.

Greenpeace joined the mix on Monday, with a handful of activists unfurling a giant banner in Venice’s St. Mark’s Square with a photo of Bezos and text that read: “IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.” Local police folded up the banner and took it away.

Venetian officials have stood their ground, even as criticism of the event escalated. In March, the city issued a statement denying reports that there would be any major disruption to daily Venetian life, even with hundreds expected to descend on the city this week for the wedding.

Venice and the surrounding metropolitan area has a population of roughly 250,000, according to Statista.
Rome — Pope Francis was resting Monday morning after a quiet night on the 10th day of his hospitalization for a complex lung infection that has provoked the early stages of kidney failure, the Vatican said.

The one-line statement didn’t say if Francis, 88, had woken up. “The night passed well, the pope slept and is resting,” it said.

His condition has revived speculation about what might happen if he becomes unconscious or otherwise incapacitated, and whether he might resign.

Balloons depicting Pope Francis are laid at the statue of John Paul II outside the Gemelli hospital where Pope Francis is hospitalized, in Rome, on Feb. 24, 2025.

Late Sunday, doctors reported that blood tests showed early kidney failure that was nevertheless under control. They said Francis remained in critical condition but that he hadn’t experienced any further respiratory crises since Saturday.

He was receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen and, on Sunday, was alert, responsive and attended Mass. They said his prognosis was guarded.

Doctors have said Francis’ condition is touch-and-go given his age, fragility and pre-existing lung disease. They’ve warned that the main threat facing Francis is sepsis, a serious infection of the blood that can occur as a complication of pneumonia.

To date there has been no reference to any onset of sepsis in the medical updates provided by the Vatican, including Sunday’s.

Monday marks Francis’ 10th day in the hospital, equaling the longest hospitalization of his papacy. He spent 10 days at Rome’s Gemelli hospital in 2021 after he had 13 inches of his colon removed.

In New York on Sunday, Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledged what church leaders in Rome weren’t saying publicly: that the Catholic faithful were united “at the bedside of a dying father.”

“As our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile health, and probably close to death,” Dolan said in his homily from the pulpit of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, though he later told reporters he hoped and prayed that Francis would “bounce back.”

Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Friday.

The Israeli official said the decision to assassinate Hezbollah’s leader was made because Nasrallah declined diplomatic efforts in the last 11 months to separate the “northern front” — Lebanon — from the war in Gaza.

The official also said Hezbollah attacks in the last weeks and months had expanded in range and velocity, which “led us to understand that he cannot be part of the game and decision maker in the region anymore.”

The official said it is up to Nasrallah’s successor to agree to a diplomatic solution that allows Israel to achieve the goals it has publicly set — the safe return of over 60,000 Israelis to their homes in the north. However, the official added, Israel has “many other tools to make sure that if they do not agree, we have other ways to achieve” that goal.
