An unlicensed motorcyclist lost control during the West Coast Thunder ride on Memorial Day, jumping a curb and striking two spectators, the Riverside Police Department said.
The injuries apparently were not severe, but the victims were hospitalized. They were seated in chairs at the time of the crash, said Officer Ryan Railsback, a Police Department spokesman.
A woman who identified herself as Mina Nolan posted on Facebook that she was home from the hospital.
“They took X-rays and a CT scan and everything seems to be okay,” she wrote. “I am very sore and my hands, wrist and knee hurt pretty bad.”
The rider was turning left from Trautwein Road onto Van Buren Boulevard when he missed the turn and hopped the curb, Railsback said. The rider was not the registered owner of the motorcycle and was not licensed to ride one, Railsback said.
Railsback said he didn’t know the experience level of the rider.
The man was cited, and the motorcycle was towed away.
West Coast Thunder has rolled through the city on Memorial Day almost every year since it began in 2000 to honor members of the U.S. Armed Services. Destinations on Monday included Riverside National Cemetery. A concert was staged at its conclusion. Some 7,500 riders were expected this year.
Some posters who responded to Nolan expressed concern about one of the ride’s traditions: spectators slapping hands with passing motorcyclists.
Railsback said the Police Department discourages that practice because it causes riders to take a hand off the handlebars, spectators to step into the street to do it and because it slows the pace of the ride.
