The Alvord Educational Foundation has given out $66,000 in scholarships to 42 high school seniors on their way to college.
The organization, which supports the Corona-based Alvord Unified School District, increased the number of $1,000, $1,500 and $2,000 scholarships this year, a news release states.
The Getty George Community Service Scholarship, which is $2,500, went to Anthony Garcia, of Riverside’s Norte Vista High School; and Sara Copple, from La Sierra High School in Riverside. Both had GPAs over 3.8, played two varsity sports and logged more than 300 community service hours, the release states.
The Rosemary Brock Memorial Teaching Scholarship — which is $2,000 — was awarded to Catrice Schmidt, a Norte Vista High graduate. Its namesake taught 30 years in Alvord schools.
La Sierra High senior Camila Rocha won the first Robert Schwandt II Memorial Business Scholarship, which is worth $2,000. Schwandt, a La Sierra High graduate, served on the Alvord school board for 10 years until his death in July 2024.
Two Giving Back Scholarships, funded by two La Sierra High graduates, went to Samantha Mandujano and Emanuel Mayorga. The awards are $1,000 each.
Ten more $2,000 scholarships, 18 $1,500 scholarships and eight $1,000 scholarships, for a total of $66,000 were awarded this year, according to the release.
Alvord educates students in the western Riverside area and part of northeast Corona.
