The E will take you up to 130 miles officially but usually less in practice. It takes an age to squeeze the last few percent of juice into the battery and it’s a brave soul who takes it down to near nothing, unless they know reliable home charge is waiting.  So on a day out, let’s call it 100 miles. And that’s not nearly enough.

It’s such a pity, because the E, while not designed as a driver’s car per se and certainly not in the same territory as the Abarth 500e in being a hot hatch, is a pleasure to drive. It’s compact, its power goes to the rear wheels (not that it troubles them) and, by dint of not getting very far under its own steam, it’s relatively light in this company: at 1520kg, it’s second lightest, behind only the 500e.

That its front wheels don’t have to worry about power means that the steering is uncorrupted, slick and smooth. And with no front driveshafts, its turning circle is wee. That makes it the most fun in town, if not with the moves of the others on a B-road. “A city slicker through and through,” said Felix Page.

Biden will travel to Michigan Tuesday to speak about UAW strike

President Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday to speak about the United Auto Workers‘ strike against Detroit automakers, the president announced Friday on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The UAW earlier invited Biden to join workers on the picket line in their fight for higher wages.

The strike is entering its second week, with the UAW reporting progress in its talks with Ford, yet widening its walkout against GM and Stellantis. 

Fain called all GM and Stellantis parts distribution facilities to strike on Friday, announcing walkouts at 38 locations across 20 states. All of the plants already on strike will remain on strike, according to Fain.

Former President Donald Trump is also expected to visit the picket lines next week in Michigan, likely the day after Biden’s visit.

The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis, but analysts expect any wider strike will include plants that build highly profitable pickup trucks, GM’s Chevy Silverado and Stellantis’ Ram.

About 12,700 workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio, which produce the Ford BroncoJeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Colorado, alongside other popular models.

UAW strike: 38 GM, Stellantis parts depot workers join picket lines

When the clock struck noon Friday, Stellantis workers filed out of the Center Line facility shouting “Save Mopar now,” a reference to the company’s plans to close some Mopar facilities and modernize its parts distribution network. Stellantis has said the moves would not result in job losses. Workers held signs and chanted “no pay, no parts.”

The decision to call on parts distribution centers came as “a total surprise” to Craig Baxter, who has worked at GM’s Customer Care and Aftersales site in Lansing, Mich., for 10 years.

Baxter said he hoped the expanded strike would bring GM to the table to offer bigger raises, adding that he supports putting the parts depots on equal footing with manufacturing plants.

“We’re General Motors and we do labor work, so we should be in the same wage pool together,” he said.

At GM’s Davison Road Processing Center outside Flint, Mich., Ira Bradley is one of about 1,200 employees. He’s been working there for only three months, but this isn’t his first strike. He was at interior supplier Faurecia in Saline, Mich., when UAW called a walkout in 2019.

Bradley said he wasn’t scheduled to be on the picket line yet but came out anyway to show support.

“This is for a cause, this is for the movement,” Bradley said. “It’s bigger than us.”

Back in Lansing, Jean Duchemin, vice president of UAW Local 1753, said what he most wants in a new contract is the end of different wages for different roles, including new hires.

“Give us a proposal that does not exclude anybody,” Duchemin said. “Everybody must be included.”

AutoNation chooses new chief operating officer

Previously, Parent was president and general manager at Gulf States Toyota, a giant independent distributor of Toyota vehicles and parts. Before that, he held several executive leadership positions at Nissan Canada, handling both Nissan and Infiniti brands as vice president of sales and marketing. Early on, Parent was a region vice president for Volkswagen of America, overseeing sales, marketing, parts, service and customer satisfaction for the automaker’s eastern region.

Meanwhile, Steve Kwak, COO, franchised business for AutoNation, will leave the company at the end of December to pursue another opportunity, the company said.

AutoNation has enacted other executive level changes this year.

In May, the company hired Thomas Szlosek, an executive from outside the auto industry, as its new CFO. He replaces Joe Lower, who was shifted to a new role overseeing business transformation initiatives.

Also in May, the company announced that Marc Cannon, its chief customer experience officer, would shift to a short-term philanthropic role and then retire at the end of the year. With that change, AutoNation named former Zales and Toys R Us executive Richard Lennox as its new chief marketing officer.

AutoNation, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., ranks No. 2 on Automotive News’ list of the top 150 dealership groups based in the U.S., with retail sales of 229,971 new vehicles in 2022.

Watch Ferrari Roma Test Mule Evaluate Possible V12 For 812 Replacement

A new spy video shows Ferrari continuing to develop some type of new supercar. The funky tailpipes and throaty exhaust note suggest this has a V12 engine under the hood that will likely power the automaker’s successor to the 812 Superfast.

The video captures the test mule driving on public roads and its harmonious engine growl. The coupe wears a full camouflage wrap that hides the modified Roma body, which features a longer nose to conceal the powertrain.

The Roma typically has twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 under the hood, but rumor suggest this test vehicle has a V12 engine. Sadly, we don’t how much about the new powertrain will produce, but the automaker is supposedly working on a more potent V12.

The most powerful iteration of the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine makes 830 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in the 812 Competizione. There is a high likelihood that the 812 Successor successor will crank out more than 830 hp when it arrives, whenever that may be, and it’s unclear if Ferrari will add any sort of electrification to the car, which could further increase its output. The standard 812 makes 789 hp.

Spy photos from May caught the V12 supercar wearing its production body, but Ferrari hid its design under thick cladding. The prototype lacked any sort of indication it had any form of electrification. Test vehicles with batteries often feature warning stickers nothing the pack.  

The photos from May also revealed the car would have massive air intakes at the front. While the rear looked unfinished with missing trim in the photos, the new car featured a different tailgate shape, with the car looking more aggressive than the stylistically similar Roma.

Ferrari hasn’t said when it would reveal the 812 successor. The model originally debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as the replacement for the F12berlinetta. Earlier this year, the company said it would reveal four new models in 2023. It has already launched the Roma Spyder and SF90 XX, and the other two could be the 812 replacement and the company’s new hypercar. Ferrari also introduced the one-off KC23 track car in July.

UAW to announce progress with Ford ahead of deadline to expand strike

DETROIT — The United Auto Workers will say it has made significant progress towards a deal with Ford Motor ahead of its Friday deadline to reach new labor agreements before expanding its strike with the Detroit Three automakers, according to a source familiar with talks.

The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis, but analysts expect any wider strike will include plants that build highly profitable pickup trucks, GM’s Chevy Silverado and Stellantis’ Ram.

The UAW declined to say if it would add additional Ford plants to the strike but said earlier this week it would not if it had seen “significant progress.” Ford shares gained 2%. Ford could not immediately be reached for comment.

About 12,700 workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio, which produce the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Colorado, alongside other popular models. UAW President Shawn Fain has warned that more of the union’s 146,000 members who work at the Detroit Three will join them if new deals are not reached before noon EDT (1600 GMT) on Friday.

The union will also invite President Joe Biden to come to the picket lines, the source said.

The standoff is fueling worries about prolonged industrial action that could disrupt production and ripple through the supply chain and dent U.S. economic growth. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday shows significant support by Americans for the striking auto workers.

Fain is due to address members on Facebook Live at 10 a.m. EDT, at which time he will outline the plants that will join the strike two hours later.

Fain has said the Detroit automakers have not shared their huge profits with workers while enriching executives and investors.

GM President Mark Reuss this week rejected those claims, saying the current offer to the union would be generous and the company’s profits have been reinvested in the transition to electric vehicles.

The automakers have proposed 20% raises over 4-1/2 years, while the UAW is seeking 40%.

The union also wants to end a tiered wage structure that it says has created a large gap between newer and older employees.

S&P said the strikes, which began on Sept. 15, were highly likely to last several weeks, potentially cutting third-quarter U.S. gross domestic product by 0.39% and causing “upheaval” across global automotive supply chains.

GM, Ford and Stellantis have said they are making contingency plans for further U.S. work stoppages.

Ford reached a last-minute deal to avoid a walkout at its Canadian operations late on Tuesday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three Ford plants in the country.

Toyota Research Institute uses AI to support humans

Whereas Guardian involves specific safety-critical situations, the institute’s human-interactive driving division is exploring ways to incorporate AI into the human driving experience.

Researchers are culling data from tests in both simulators and on racetracks to try to understand how motorists’ awareness levels correlate to steering, braking and throttle inputs. They’re further monitoring how drivers behave when they encounter yellow lights.

By analyzing and predicting responses, they hope to blend assistive features into the driving experience in a way that feels intuitive and sensible to humans. They further hope they can use AI as a driving coach of sort. It might help humans form better individual habits and incentivize good behavior.

“Imagine a car that you put your teenage children in, and you don’t have to be there,” said Avinash Balachandran, senior director of the human-interactive driving division. “You’re confident the car is going to make them a better driver.”

The notion that R&D efforts should still orbit around the idea of a human driver runs counter to many industry sentiments. And it’s not the only area in which Toyota has flashed a contrarian streak.

The automaker has said it would spend $70 billion on electrification efforts. It has committed to ensuring a third of its approximately 10 million vehicles sold globally each year are EVs by 2030. But Toyota says reducing carbon emissions should be its primary goal, not selling electric vehicles.

Toyota believes there are alternatives, namely hydrogen fuel cells, that can overcome battery-electric limitations in specific applications, such as long-haul trucking, and achieve a faster path toward net-zero emissions.

“We believe we need diverse solutions,” said Brian Storey, senior director of the institute’s energy and materials division.

It is his job to find and enhance them.

The division develops new materials for batteries and fuel cells as well as hydrogen electrolyzer and solar technology. It’s working on battery chemistries that need less rare-earth material and researching solid-state battery technology. The institute works with several university partners and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Part of their work utilizes new algorithms that make faster sense of datasets than humans could understand on their own.

It can take almost 50 years for new chemistries to transform into mature products, Storey said, and “a lot has to happen in a short amount of time” for the industry to meet carbon-reduction targets.

Part of his mission is to shrink that time frame by utilizing new machine-learning techniques. It helps focus research when “there’s an infinite number of possibilities, and we’ve only scratched the surface in the kinds of things we can make,” he said.

Ford car dealership worker dismissed after anti-UAW comment

A Lithia spokesperson told Automotive News that the employee was “let go” Friday for violating the company’s social media policy.

The former employee’s profile is no longer on the dealership’s website, and their Facebook profile also appears to have been removed.

“We understand there was a comment from one of our employees on social media recently that hurt many people,” the dealership’s Facebook post said. “Although we cannot control a individual from voicing their opinion on social media, Suburban Ford of Ferndale doesn’t support the same message and supports all UAW workers, and we support their right to strike.”

The UAW launched a historic strike against all three Detroit automakers last Friday. About 13,000 workers at three plants — one each from General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis — are on strike. The Ford plant is Michigan Assembly in Wayne, which also is in the Detroit area.

UAW President Shawn Fain announced in a Monday video that the automakers have a deadline of noon this Friday to make “serious progress” in negotiations before he expands the “stand-up strike.”

Suburban Ford of Ferndale is part of Lithia’s Suburban Collection in southeast Michigan. Lithia bought the large private group in April 2021.

A handful of people left negative reviews on the dealership’s Facebook page, voicing their displeasure with the former employee’s comments. In addition, several older Facebook posts by the dealership were filled with commenters voicing their frustration.

Thom Fladung, managing partner for crisis communications company Hennes Communications in Cleveland, said everything on social media potentially can go viral.

“Inappropriate use of social media by employees is one of the most frequent self-inflicted crises that we see,” Fladung told Automotive News.

Fladung said everyone has the ability to say what they want on social media, but with a caveat: Employees have to realize the impact it could have on their employer.

And employees should realize their actions could have other consequences, he said.

“You always represent that employer in some way or other,” Fladung said. “What we saw here is always possible.”

Lithia, of Medford, Ore., ranks No. 1 on Automotive Newslist of the top 150 dealership groups based in the U.S., retailing 271,596 new vehicles in 2022. Lithia’s sales figures include dealerships outside the U.S.

Chevy Silverado Crushes C8 Corvette In Crazy Crash, Everyone Walks Away

Here’s a nightmare scenario for anyone who drives a low-riding sports car. Before diving into the story, the good (and surprising) news here is that nobody was injured. As for the bad news, the pictures should make that quite obvious.

This unwelcome Chevrolet meetup took place on September 18 in Thornton, Colorado, a suburb of Denver to the north. Specifically, the crash happened at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and 168th Avenue, also known as Country Road 2. Crews from three municipalities responded, with the Thornton Fire Department sharing these spooky images of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck perched squarely atop a C8 Corvette.

 

We call these photos spooky for two reasons. There’s the obvious shock factor of having pickup truck wheels perched just outside the Corvette’s cockpit. You can bet its occupant (or occupants, we don’t know how many people were inside the ‘Vette) had a moment of terror as the Silverado came to rest on the windshield. The second reason is a question we’re still trying to answer – how did it get up there?

Modern pickup trucks are certainly sizable machines, and with off-road packages they can ride pretty tall from the factory. However, this particular Silverado (which looks like a facelifted third-gen truck) may not even have four-wheel drive. The wheels appear to be modest mid-level Chevy rims wearing equally modest tires, and there are no visible suspension upgrades. Judging by the grille, it could be a truck in LS trim and even if it’s a 4×4, we don’t see a Z71 badge denoting the optional off-road upfit. For all intents and purposes, this should be one of the lowest-riding late-model Chevy half-ton trucks you can get. And yet here it is.

As for the Corvette, it’s always been a low-slung sports car and the mid-engine C8 certainly isn’t an exception. We can see this one is a Stingray, both by the design of the front fascia and the Stingray emblem on the engine cover. Does it have aftermarket suspension? That’s a question only the owner can answer at this point, because you know, a 2.5-ton pickup truck crushing the car tends to compress the springs. Kudos to that A-pillar though. We don’t know how it looked immediately after impact (there are jacks supporting the truck in these photos) but it was at least strong enough to prevent injuries.

Google Maps tells us this particular intersection is a four-way stop in a rural setting, so that adds even more fuel to this mystery. Still, it’s not like crazy crashes never happen – lest we forget the Ford Explorer that legit drove up and over a C4 Corvette at an intersection back in July 2022. That was a slow-speed event, though the position of the truck and the visible damage on the front of the Corvette in this crash suggests a bit more speed was involved.

Motor1.com contacted both the fire and police departments in Thornton in hopes of getting additional context on this collision. We’re awaiting a response, and we will share that will all of you as soon as it comes in. Until then, stay safe out there everyone. And for crying out loud, please stop driving over Corvettes.

Radical new Lexus concept previews long-range EV for 2026

Lexus will show a radical new concept next month, which previews a ‘next-generation’ electric car it will launch in 2026. 

Said to “revolutionise the modular structure of the vehicle body, drastically change the production method, and completely revamp the software platform”, the new car will serve as a statement of intent for the Japanese luxury brand as it pushes forward with a plan to electrify its entire line-up by 2035.

It is expected to be conceived along the lines of the recently revealed BMW Neue Klasse, Mercedes Concept CLA and Vauxhall Experimental show cars as an all-encompassing vision of the design cues, technological upgrades and performance potential that will distinguish the marque’s upcoming EVs from its current line-up. 

Previewed as part of a recent Lexus Showcase event in Japan, the concept looks to be a dramatic, low-slung EV, possibly derived from the rakish saloon concept the firm showed briefly in late 2021. If it adopts a similar five-door fastback silhouette, it will serve as a natural rival to the likes of the BMW i4 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

Lexus has given no further details of the concept – or the production car it previews – but parent company Toyota revealed last week that it will also begin launching a new family of electric cars, touting drastic improvements in range and price compared with the marque’s current EVs.

The headline upgrade for the Japanese firm’s new family of EVs – set to be shared with their Lexus counterparts – is a new type of lithium ion battery that claims a range of 497 miles from a single charge.

The new, more efficient chemistry allows for slimmer battery packs, which facilitates lower-slung and more aerodynamically optimised car designs with roomier interiors – features that could reasonably be expected to define the new Lexus concept. 

The new lithium ion battery chemistry will eventually be offered alongside a ‘High Performance’ solid-state battery option that boosts range to 621 miles, Toyota claims. Lexus has not yet expressed an ambition to match that figure with a production car but has suggested it will use solid-state technology for the production version of its Electrified Sport supercar concept

BMW Motorrad issues stop-sale order for new and used motorcycles

BMW Motorrad, the German carmaker’s motorcycle-building sister company, has issued a stop-sale order that applies to all new internal-combustion and some used models in North America. While details are vague, the brand allegedly found a problem with the evaporative system in its engines.

“Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to specifications,” BMW wrote in a statement obtained by BMW Owners News.

The company describes the stop-sale order as “temporary and voluntary” and adds that it applies to all new and pre-owned models currently sitting in a dealer’s inventory. BMW stresses that the problem does not affect safety and that owners can continue to ride their motorcycle. We’ll need to be patient to find out precisely what the problem is, when and how it will be fixed, and which models are affected by it.

For context, the evaporative system referred to in the statement traps fuel vapors and channels them back into the engine so that they can be burned. In simple terms, it normally consists of a small charcoal canister connected to the fuel tank and the engine via a series of lines. This system isn’t specific to motorcycles: all new cars sold in the United States since the early 1970s feature a similar setup. In newer cars, the evaporative system (often abbreviated EVAP) is linked to the on-board diagnostic system and can trigger a check-engine light.

We’ll provide more details on this developing story as they become available. Nothing suggests BMW’s cars are affected by this problem.

UAW strike: Stellantis submits new proposal, GM shares more specifics

A source with knowledge of the negotiations said GM and the union remained far apart on an agreement as of Wednesday. The UAW declined to comment on whether it was close to a deal with any of the three companies.

GM officials went public with specifics about its most recent offer, which includes raises totaling 20 percent over the next four years for UAW-represented employees. That would bring top wages to $39.24 in 2027, including for workers at components and parts distribution facilities who currently earn less than other employees, GM President Mark Reuss said Wednesday.

In an opinion piece published in the Detroit Free Press, Reuss said GM’s Sept. 14 proposal — presented on the day the automaker’s previous contract with the UAW expired — would move all employees covered under the national contract to the same pay system and allow new employees to reach the top wage in four years. That would be a reduction from the current eight years for new hires.

“We have assembly and manufacturing jobs, we have warehousing jobs and we have supply jobs,” Reuss wrote. “Within these distinctly different businesses in our national contract, everyone is paid on the same wage structure.”

GM’s proposal would raise base wages for 85 percent of its represented work force to about $82,000 per year, with total compensation topping $150,000 annually when factoring in overtime pay and benefits such as health care, he wrote. The company’s offer also ensures that products will be allocated to — meaning work would continue at — all of GM’s U.S. facilities, Reuss wrote, signaling that the automaker does not intend to close any plants as it transitions to an all-electric vehicle lineup.
 
Reuss called the union’s demands “untenable,” noting that GM invests its profits into the company and its employees, including to prepare plants to build EVs and also for future gasoline-powered pickups and SUVs.
 
GM earned roughly $65 billion in net income from 2013 to 2022, including $9.9 billion last year, according to Reuss’ op-ed piece and GM’s annual reports filed with federal regulators. The automaker’s capital expenditures totaled more than $77 billion in that same period, according to regulatory filings. The company said when reporting second-quarter earnings in July that it expects capital spending of $11 billion to $12 billion this year.

The Detroit 3 have pushed back against the UAW’s criticism of their proposals in recent days. Fain has said the companies are earning record profits but paying “poverty wages” to employees.

“Amid the rhetoric of the United Auto Workers leadership, the flow of misinformation is not fair to anyone. It can be hugely counterproductive to reaching an agreement that gets the GM team back to work quickly, which should be everyone’s goal,” Reuss wrote.

“The record offer we proposed on Sept. 14 recognizes the many contributions our represented team members make to our company — past, present and future,” he wrote. “And it addresses, directly, what they’ve told us matters most: wage growth, job security and long-term stability.”
