DAIKOJIMACHI, Japan — Brembo, the premium Italian brake-maker known for outfitting Ferrari and Lamborghini, plans to “democratize” high-performance, all-electric brake systems for mass-market brands with a new technology that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence.
The new setup, called Sensify, enables precise vehicle control by constantly applying different brake force to each of the four wheels independently. Brembo calls the development as revolutionary as the advent of antilock braking systems and wants to start production in 2025.
“Brembo is associated with high-end sports cars,” Dino Maggioni, COO of Brembo’s Global Business Unit, said during a demonstration at a proving ground here north of Tokyo last month.
“But with Sensify, we are presenting a solution that will democratize four-wheel independence,” he said. “It’s a revolutionary development in braking. It’s opening a new era.”

NetJets named launch customer for the new Cessna Citation Ascend
WICHITA, Kan.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Textron Aviation and NetJets® today announced a record-breaking fleet agreement for the option for NetJets to purchase up to 1,500 additional Cessna Citation business jets over the next 15 years. This agreement extends NetJets’ existing fleet agreement, and includes options for an increasing number of aircraft each year, enabling NetJets to expand its fleet with Cessna Citation Ascend, Citation Latitude and Citation Longitude aircraft. Equally exciting is the announcement that NetJets has been named the fleet launch customer for Textron Aviation’s newest jet — the Citation Ascend. Deliveries of the Citation Ascend are expected to begin in 2025 when the aircraft, currently under development, is expected to enter into service.

Volvo announced at Climate Week NYC today that it will stop producing diesel vehicles by early 2024. It said the decision illustrates how rapidly both the car industry and consumer demand are changing in the face of the climate crisis.
As recently as 2019, the majority of Volvo’s cars sold in Europe were diesel-powered, as was the case for many other car makers. Electric vehicles accounted for a very small percentage of sales. That trend has reversed itself. Today, the majority of Volvo’s vehicles are either fully electric or feature a plug-in electric hybrid powertrain.

In addition to eliminating diesel-powered cars, Volvo plans to be fully electric by 2030 and is aiming to be climate-neutral by 2040. Those targets follow the decision the automaker made last November when it sold its stake in Aurobay, a joint venture containing all of its combustion engine assets. As a result, Volvo no longer spends money on gasoline or diesel engine development.
Speaking at Climate Week in New York City, Jim Rowan, the chief executive at Volvo Cars, stated the company is fully focused on creating a lineup of premium, fully electric cars. “Electric powertrains are our future and superior to combustion engines. They generate less noise, less vibration, less servicing costs for our customers, and zero tailpipe emissions,” he said.
To further emphasize that point, Anders Karrberg, Volvo’s chief sustainability officer, will attend an event organized by the Accelerating to Zero Coalition at this year’s Climate Week. Launched at the COP27 climate summit, the A2Z Coalition provides a multi-stakeholder platform for signatories of the Glasgow Declaration on Zero Emission Vehicles. That platform’s objective is to reduce tailpipe emissions to zero on new vehicle sales by 2040.
Meanwhile, Volvo is moving ahead by launching a full slate of electric vehicles. Earlier this year, it launched the EX30, the company’s cheapest EV, which starts at $34,950. It debuted the EX90 at CES in January, which begins deliveries in early 2024. Eventually, the automaker plans to launch a minimum of six EVs by 2026, including an electric version of the XC60 and a new EM90 minivan.

Over 50% of the electrical systems in homes are not ready for EV charging.
ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) recently surveyed electric vehicle (EV) owners to gauge their understanding of EVs and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), or EV charging stations and chargers. The goal of the survey was to identify safety gaps related to emerging technology to ensure consumers are safe while operating and charging their EVs. The survey results show that over 50% of the electrical systems in homes are not ready for EV charging.
Survey respondents agreed that safety needs to be the top priority when installing and using EVSE. The majority of EV owners – 75% – have not had any charging issues, but 8% have received an electrical shock. Several responses highlighted various safety considerations, from the installation location to the use of certified equipment. Several respondents stressed the importance of choosing a high-quality charger from a reputable source. There is a clear need for information regarding charging EVs safely. Nearly one-third of owners surveyed did not receive information related to charging before purchasing their EV. ESFI’s EV resources can be utilized to ensure consumers have the safety information they need to keep themselves safe.
The survey respondents also stressed the importance of conducting thorough research before purchasing and installing EVSE, as well as hiring a qualified EV installer to complete the installation process. “Older homes may not be able to safely handle EV charging without overloading the home’s electrical system,” said ESFI President Brett Brenner. “ESFI urges consumers to have a qualified electrician complete an assessment on their home before purchasing or installing EVSE to ensure their electrical system can withstand the demands of EV charging.”
When respondents were asked about preparing their homes for EVs, 63% said they scheduled a home inspection before EVSE installation, while 54% needed an electrical panel upgrade. Many respondents mentioned the convenience of having a home EV charger, focusing on the benefit of charging overnight and eliminating reliance on public charging stations, as many cited problems with finding available charging stations. This included a general scarcity of charging stations, stations occupied by non-EVs, or stations in inconvenient locations. Respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the time it takes to fully charge an electric vehicle, which is problematic when charging infrastructure is scarce or while on a long trip.
ESFI recommends only using manufacturer-approved charging cables. Non-approved adapters can bypass safety features installed in manufacturer-approved chargers. They can also cause shocks, fires, and even damage your car’s battery. When respondents were asked about EV adapters, 45% said they had purchased an adapter, while 53% had not. “We are encouraged by the survey findings, as customer safety is our top priority as we seek an electrified future,” said John DeBoer, head of Siemens eMobility, North America. “We advise the public to only purchase certified equipment from trusted sources, check electrical manufacturers’ websites, and find authorized retailers and installers.”

ESFI reminds consumers to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging an EV. Inspect your charger prior to charging, and never use it if it’s damaged. Extension cords should never be used; only use manufacturer-approved charging cables. Don’t alter or modify your charger, battery, or electric vehicle. Always remember to properly store your EV charger to avoid water and other damage. When parking in a public EV charging spot, be aware of your surroundings so you don’t run into a charger. Lexus will show a radical new concept next month, which previews a ‘next-generation’ electric car it will launch in 2026.
Said to “revolutionise the modular structure of the vehicle body, drastically change the production method, and completely revamp the software platform”, the new car will serve as a statement of intent for the Japanese luxury brand as it pushes forward with a plan to electrify its entire line-up by 2035.
It is expected to be conceived along the lines of the recently revealed BMW Neue Klasse, Mercedes Concept CLA and Vauxhall Experimental show cars as an all-encompassing vision of the design cues, technological upgrades and performance potential that will distinguish the marque’s upcoming EVs from its current line-up.
Previewed as part of a recent Lexus Showcase event in Japan, the concept looks to be a dramatic, low-slung EV, possibly derived from the rakish saloon concept the firm showed briefly in late 2021. If it adopts a similar five-door fastback silhouette, it will serve as a natural rival to the likes of the BMW i4 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.
Lexus has given no further details of the concept – or the production car it previews – but parent company Toyota revealed last week that it will also begin launching a new family of electric cars, touting drastic improvements in range and price compared with the marque’s current EVs.
The headline upgrade for the Japanese firm’s new family of EVs – set to be shared with their Lexus counterparts – is a new type of lithium ion battery that claims a range of 497 miles from a single charge.
The new, more efficient chemistry allows for slimmer battery packs, which facilitates lower-slung and more aerodynamically optimised car designs with roomier interiors – features that could reasonably be expected to define the new Lexus concept.
The new lithium ion battery chemistry will eventually be offered alongside a ‘High Performance’ solid-state battery option that boosts range to 621 miles, Toyota claims. Lexus has not yet expressed an ambition to match that figure with a production car but has suggested it will use solid-state technology for the production version of its Electrified Sport supercar concept.

About 13,000 workers at three plants — one each from General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis — are currently on strike and would become eligible for strike pay from the union on the day of Fain’s next announcement.
After the strike began, Ford laid off about 600 additional workers in Michigan as a consequence of its reduced production capacity, and GM has said it will need to lay off about 2,000 workers in Kansas as early as this week.
Negotiations continued Monday, although Fain has called progress “slow.” A person with knowledge of the talks said the union has not received any new proposals from the automakers since the strike began.
Fain told NPR earlier Monday that “the ball’s in their court,” referring to the companies.
Bargaining at the subcommittee level continues at a near constant pace while the union has held main table discussions with each company since the strike began. It met with Ford on Saturday, GM on Sunday and Stellantis on Monday.
In a statement, Stellantis said “the discussion was constructive and focused on where we can find common ground to reach an agreement that provides a bridge to the future by enabling the Company to meet the challenges of electrification.” It said the two sides “have the opportunity to establish a framework in this contract that will allow the company to be competitive during this historic transformation and bring our workforce along on this journey. This includes identifying a solution for Belvidere, something we have been committed to from the beginning and a discussion we want to continue with the UAW.”

President Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday to speak about the United Auto Workers‘ strike against Detroit automakers, the president announced Friday on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The UAW earlier invited Biden to join workers on the picket line in their fight for higher wages.
The strike is entering its second week, with the UAW reporting progress in its talks with Ford, yet widening its walkout against GM and Stellantis.
Fain called all GM and Stellantis parts distribution facilities to strike on Friday, announcing walkouts at 38 locations across 20 states. All of the plants already on strike will remain on strike, according to Fain.
Former President Donald Trump is also expected to visit the picket lines next week in Michigan, likely the day after Biden’s visit.
About 12,700 workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio, which produce the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Colorado, alongside other popular models.

Looks like we have us another mystery courtesy of that most mysterious of automakers. Tesla’s website no longer offers what had been least expensive Model Y trim, the Standard Range AWD that started at $49,230 after the $1,390 destination charge but before incentives. The car just joined the configurator in April of this year. There are two Model Y variants available now, the Long Range that starts at $51,880 and the Performance that starts at $55,580. The automaker didn’t explain the omission nor answer questions about it, leaving lots of speculation to fill the vacuum. The reigning theory concerns batteries and production capacity. The Model Y Standard Range AWD was the only trim built at Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory and the only trim to use Tesla’s 4680 battery cells. Many believe that with the Cybertruck inching its way toward series production at the same Texas facility, Tesla wants to devote resources to the enormously popular truck.
As Drive Tesla Canada noted, there are two intriguing aspects of that suggestion. First, a Tesla powertrain VP said the Cybertruck will use 4680 cells with a new chemistry enabling more range and efficiency, so the Model Y shutdown could portend a battery facility changeover as well. Second, even though we’re seeing more Cybertruck prototypes out and about, the stainless steel wonder doesn’t look close to being a threat to Gigafactory production capacity.
Other theories wonder if Tesla is, like many automakers, just culling the trim that pulls in the smallest profit, or perhaps trying to create more MSRP distance between the Model Y crossover and the Model 3 sedan. Of course, the theories and their counterpoints are all guesses. The Model 3 change follows a similar move with the Model S and Model X earlier this month — also unexplained. Tesla dropped the Standard Range versions of the sedan and falcon-doored SUV from the online Design Studio. The S and X can only be had in either Dual-Motor AWD or Plaid guise for the moment.
The Texas plant has been down for scheduled maintenance. Perhaps the model will return when the plant gets running again, or we might need to wait until the Cybertruck debuts to find out what’s going on. Until then, the only way to get a Model Y Standard Range AWD is to source one in Tesla’s inventory or on the used market.

BMW Motorrad, the German carmaker’s motorcycle-building sister company, has issued a stop-sale order that applies to all new internal-combustion and some used models in North America. While details are vague, the brand allegedly found a problem with the evaporative system in its engines.
“Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to specifications,” BMW wrote in a statement obtained by BMW Owners News.
The company describes the stop-sale order as “temporary and voluntary” and adds that it applies to all new and pre-owned models currently sitting in a dealer’s inventory. BMW stresses that the problem does not affect safety and that owners can continue to ride their motorcycle. We’ll need to be patient to find out precisely what the problem is, when and how it will be fixed, and which models are affected by it.
For context, the evaporative system referred to in the statement traps fuel vapors and channels them back into the engine so that they can be burned. In simple terms, it normally consists of a small charcoal canister connected to the fuel tank and the engine via a series of lines. This system isn’t specific to motorcycles: all new cars sold in the United States since the early 1970s feature a similar setup. In newer cars, the evaporative system (often abbreviated EVAP) is linked to the on-board diagnostic system and can trigger a check-engine light.
We’ll provide more details on this developing story as they become available. Nothing suggests BMW’s cars are affected by this problem.

When the clock struck noon Friday, Stellantis workers filed out of the Center Line facility shouting “Save Mopar now,” a reference to the company’s plans to close some Mopar facilities and modernize its parts distribution network. Stellantis has said the moves would not result in job losses. Workers held signs and chanted “no pay, no parts.”
The decision to call on parts distribution centers came as “a total surprise” to Craig Baxter, who has worked at GM’s Customer Care and Aftersales site in Lansing, Mich., for 10 years.
Baxter said he hoped the expanded strike would bring GM to the table to offer bigger raises, adding that he supports putting the parts depots on equal footing with manufacturing plants.
“We’re General Motors and we do labor work, so we should be in the same wage pool together,” he said.
At GM’s Davison Road Processing Center outside Flint, Mich., Ira Bradley is one of about 1,200 employees. He’s been working there for only three months, but this isn’t his first strike. He was at interior supplier Faurecia in Saline, Mich., when UAW called a walkout in 2019.
Bradley said he wasn’t scheduled to be on the picket line yet but came out anyway to show support.
“This is for a cause, this is for the movement,” Bradley said. “It’s bigger than us.”
Back in Lansing, Jean Duchemin, vice president of UAW Local 1753, said what he most wants in a new contract is the end of different wages for different roles, including new hires.
“Give us a proposal that does not exclude anybody,” Duchemin said. “Everybody must be included.”

If Bugatti’s founder was still alive today, he would’ve turned 142 years old on September 15. As it were, Ettore Bugatti was only 65 when he passed away in 1947, but his legacy certainly lives on. For the last 40 years, the weekend closest to his birthday has become a festival and celebration of his life in and around Molsheim, and 70 vehicles bearing his name were on hand to partake in this year’s Bugatti Festival.
For those who may have forgotten, Molsheim isn’t just the location for Bugatti’s modern-day headquarters. Ettore Bugatti set up his original factory in the modest French town back in 1908, though it was left in ruins after World War II. Bugatti the company died in the early 1960s, was revived in the 1980s, became part of Volkswagen in the late 1990s, and is presently still under the VW umbrella as Bugatti Rimac.

Now that we’re up to speed, spend some time perusing the above photo gallery with highlights of the latest festival. Classic Bugattis from Ettore’s era were plentiful, including vintage race cars like the Type 32 Tank, Type 35, and a Type 57G. Road-going classics included the Type 57C Stelvio and the Type 49 Long Wheelbase among many others, but the celebration featured plenty of modern Bugatti hypercars as well.
The EB110 – very much a modern classic in this collection – shared space with the Veyron and Chiron of the V16 era. The track-only Bolide, which we recently saw in all its carbon-fiber monocoque glory, represented the pinnacle of current Bugatti performance. Considering the Chiron Super Sport 300+ is capable of reaching 300 mph, that’s saying something. Though admittedly, the Bolide is designed to corner instead of blasting flat-out down miles of straight asphalt.
The three-day festival brought Bugatti owners together, but it wasn’t just an event for a fortunate few. Vehicles were on display in Molsheim for the public to enjoy, and for the final day of the festival, select roads were closed to traffic. That gave Bugatti owners a chance to showcase the performance of these special machines, much to the delight of everyone we’re sure.

A new spy video shows Ferrari continuing to develop some type of new supercar. The funky tailpipes and throaty exhaust note suggest this has a V12 engine under the hood that will likely power the automaker’s successor to the 812 Superfast.
The video captures the test mule driving on public roads and its harmonious engine growl. The coupe wears a full camouflage wrap that hides the modified Roma body, which features a longer nose to conceal the powertrain.

The Roma typically has twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 under the hood, but rumor suggest this test vehicle has a V12 engine. Sadly, we don’t how much about the new powertrain will produce, but the automaker is supposedly working on a more potent V12.
The most powerful iteration of the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine makes 830 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in the 812 Competizione. There is a high likelihood that the 812 Successor successor will crank out more than 830 hp when it arrives, whenever that may be, and it’s unclear if Ferrari will add any sort of electrification to the car, which could further increase its output. The standard 812 makes 789 hp.
Spy photos from May caught the V12 supercar wearing its production body, but Ferrari hid its design under thick cladding. The prototype lacked any sort of indication it had any form of electrification. Test vehicles with batteries often feature warning stickers nothing the pack.
The photos from May also revealed the car would have massive air intakes at the front. While the rear looked unfinished with missing trim in the photos, the new car featured a different tailgate shape, with the car looking more aggressive than the stylistically similar Roma.
Ferrari hasn’t said when it would reveal the 812 successor. The model originally debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as the replacement for the F12berlinetta. Earlier this year, the company said it would reveal four new models in 2023. It has already launched the Roma Spyder and SF90 XX, and the other two could be the 812 replacement and the company’s new hypercar. Ferrari also introduced the one-off KC23 track car in July.

According to CCC Intelligent Solutions, the auto technician work force will decline by 4 percent from 2020 through the decade’s end.

“Volvo is leaning in from a recruiting and training perspective,” Moynihan said, “and sometimes it’s the little things that count — like a uniform that is designed for the job and the person wearing it.”
