EASTVALE — There was a DJ spinning tunes during Tuesday evening’s CIF Southern Section Open Division boys basketball game between Roosevelt and Redondo.
Chumbawamba’s 1997 smash hit “Tubthumping” was not on the playlist, but the song might best sum up the performance Brayden Burries delivered for the Mustangs.

Burries drove the basket and crashed to the floor a number of times. A few fouls were called, others were not. But every time he got knocked down. Burries got up again.
The McDonald’s All-American scored a game-high 44 points and sparked the 21-0 second-half run that helped Roosevelt pull away for an 89-67 win over the Seahawks.
Roosevelt is the only remaining unbeaten team in its Open Division pool. Friday night, the Mustangs (29-2) host Sierra Canyon, which fell to St. John Bosco on Tuesday.
The game was tied at 46 with 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter after Redondo’s Brayden Miner and SJ Madison drained 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions.
Roosevelt’s defense took over from there, forcing Redondo (24-5) to turn the ball over on five of its final seven possession of the period. Roosevelt converted those into points and closed the quarter on a 16-0 run. Burries scored 11 points during that important stretch, including a basket and two free throws coming after he stole the ball.
“We just got dialed in defensively and really speeded them up into making mistakes,” said senior guard Issac Williamson, who finished with 14 points for the Mustangs.
Jackson Haggis sank a 3-pointer to get the fourth quarter started, and another Redondo turnover and basket by Burries made it a 21-0 run and a 67-46 Roosevelt lead.
“Roosevelt took advantage of all of our habits that aren’t always positive,” Seahawks coach Reggie Morris said. “They were very aggressive and scrappy on defense.”
Burries got hammered by a defender with 6 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter, but no foul was called. Roosevelt coach Stephen Singleton was livid and was issued a technical foul as he went to check on Burries on the baseline. That seemed to get the Mustangs fired up, particularly Burries, who scored 19 points in the third period.
“I just got into that killer mindset,” Burries said. “I had a great first quarter but let Redondo dictate my play in the second. I had to get back to doing what was working.”
The opening quarter was tightly-contested with five lead changes and two tied scores. Burries scored 15 points in the period to stake the Mustangs to an 18-15 lead.
Redondo showed plenty of fight, not surprising as the Seahawks were coming off a 77-75 victory over St. John Bosco last Friday. Roosevelt led by as many as eight in the second period, but Redondo closed the half with a 10-2 run to level things at 31 at the break. Chris Sanders led the way for the Seahawks with 10 first-half points.
Burries, who also tallied 12 rebounds and four steals Tuesday, was 5 for 5 from the field during the third quarter and also was a perfect 8 for 8 at the line that period.
“He was unbelievable tonight,” Singleton said of Burries. “The way he got locked in, there was just going to be no denying us tonight. We’re on a mission right now.”
Roosevelt shot 64.2 % (18 of 28) from the field in the second half en route to 58 points. Haggins had the hot hand late, scoring all 14 of his points after intermission.
Morris gave a lot of credit for Roosevelt’s second-half flurry to Myles Walker, who scored only six points in the game but dished out nine assists and had six steals.
“I think he really is the heart and soul of that team,” Morris said of Walker. “He was great, Brayden was great. Issac was great. You have to take your hat off to them.”
But the biggest and most important statistic for the Mustangs in Tuesday night’s game was the turnover differential. Redondo had 18, while Roosevelt had only three.
“That’s what we do,” Singleton said. “We’re not the biggest team. We’re not going to win the rebounding battle most nights, but we know we can win that turnover battle. We’re creating extra possession for ourselves and we’re taking care of the basketball. When you can do those things, you’re going to have opportunities to win games.”
This was the first of a brutal three-game stretch for Roosevelt. After the game against Sierra Canyon, the Mustangs close pool play with St. John Bosco next Tuesday.
“We’ve been prepared for this moment since we started in the summer,” Burries said. “We’ve played in big games all season and those got us ready for the playoffs.”
Madison scored 19 points to lead a balanced attack for Redondo. Hudson Mayes and Sanders finished with 16 and 13 points, respectively, for the Seahawks.
Redondo’s season could be on the line the next time it takes the court. The Seahawks have their pool-play bye Friday and will host Heritage Christian next Tuesday. The winner of the game will secure a CIF State playoff berth. The loser likely will finish last in the pool and have its season come to an end.
“This was a learning experience,” Morris said. “Hopefully we’ll be back and figure it out. We know we need that win to stay alive. We have to treat it like it’s do or die.”
