A man who had locked himself inside a restroom at a McDonald’s in Riverside and who police say later fought with officers died at a hospital after they used force on him, the Riverside Police Department said.
The confrontation happened around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at the restaurant at 7474 Indiana St., near Madison Street and the 91 Freeway, a department news release said. An employee told police the man did not respond when they asked him to leave the restroom. Officers, however, were able to get him out.
“The man became combative and force was used to detain him,” the release said. “Medical aid responded, and while being treated by paramedics, he remained combative before going into medical distress. He was transported to a local hospital, where medical staff provided treatment for over an hour. Despite their efforts, the man later died.”
Police declined to describe the force used.
The man’s cause of death is under investigation.
The man’s name is being withheld until the Riverside County Coroner’s Office completes its investigation.
