Riverside city firefighters battled a blaze in an auto salvage yard near the downtown interchange that prompted the closure of some freeway lanes on Monday morning, Jan. 13.
The fire was reported at 9:15 a.m. at 2011 Spruce St.
Winds pushed the flames up an embankment toward the 215 Freeway, causing the right two southbound lanes to be temporarily shut down.
Although it was reported as a vegetation fire, it was unclear whether the fire ignited in the brush or in one of the vehicles that burned, said Capt. Paul Seawright, a Fire Department spokesman.
Numerous cars and commercial trailers burned in a 3-acre swath, sending thick black smoke aloft that could be seen from miles away.

Some 50 firefighters gained control of the blaze within about 70 minutes, Seawright said. Firefighters from the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department and the Corona Fire Department covered city stations during that time.
No injuries were reported, Seawright said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
