Ontario International Airport has finished $90 million in improvements to its runways.

The runway rehabilitation project, which started in February 2023, upgraded and modernized the lighting and taxiways that pilots use to maneuver around the airport.

“With an airport that transports millions of people, we want to make sure our runways are up to date and as clean as possible,” spokesperson Steve Lambert said, adding that improvements had not been done in a long time.

In addition, a new taxiway was built, old concrete was removed, and 80,000 square yards of repaving was laid onto the airport’s southernmost runway in February 2024.

While taxiways don’t make runways longer, they connect to the runway and allow aircrafts to move through the airport on the ground without using the runway, Lambert said.

Officials announced that $67 of the $90 million total cost was paid through federal grants.

The airport covered the rest with its own revenues, a release states.

Rep. Norma Torres, D-Pomona, and other elected officials were congratulated by Ontario airport officials in an Instagram post for their role in securing the federal funds.

The airfield upgrades coincide with Ontario airport’s predictions that it will handle more than 7 million passengers this year, thanks in part to the recent spike in holiday travelers.
