2 killed after weekend collision on Highway 74 Freeway near Perris

Two drivers died after a head-on collision on Highway 74 in an unincorporated county area near Perris late Sunday night.

The coroner identified one driver as Samantha Hernandez Renteria, 23, of Costa Mesa but has not yet named the other motorist. The California Highway Patrol described him as a 20-year-old man from Lake Elsinore.

The fatal crash happened on the freeway, just west of 7th Street at 11:33 p.m.

The man was driving a Honda CRV heading east when he crossed into the westbound lanes and crashed head-on with a westbound Nissan Sentra, according to a CHP statement.

Both drivers died at the scene.

It’s still unknown why the SUV driver went over the double yellow lines, CHP Officer Mike Lassig said. The CHP has not yet determined how fast both vehicles were traveling before the crash.

Authorities asked that anyone with information about the crash call the CHP Temecula office at 951-506-2000.
