Five young musicians from Riverside Arts Academy recently participated in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) National Festival.
They are Jakob Saffi, oboe; Liam Membreno, violin; Tobias Membreno, viola; Jasmine Yang. violin; and Donnie Vasquez, percussion.
They were chosen for the YOLA National Festival through a national audition process and were among about 180 young musicians from across the United States participating in a weeklong session of music making at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, led by conductor Gustavo Dudamel and other professional musicians, according to a news release from Riverside Arts Academy.
“Seeing our students stand alongside the nation’s finest young musicians is a moment of pride for all of Riverside,” Adam Karelin, Riverside Arts Academy’s executive and artistic director, said in the news release. “Wherever great music is being made, we believe Riverside voices should be heard.”
In addition to the YOLA National Festival, Riverside Arts Academy was represented at the 2025 Mariachi Nationals, with its flagship mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Campana de Riverside, performing at nationals.
“Seeing our mariachi students take the next step in their musical journey and commit to their education fills me with pride,” Alex Treviño II, head of Riverside Arts Academy’s mariachi programs, said in the news release. “We have worked tirelessly this year, and their dedication has truly paid off. The love for mariachi music is spreading beautifully here in Riverside, and our students are leading the way.”
Riverside Arts Academy, a nonprofit that offers a variety of music programs for students from second through 12th grade, is enrolling students of all ability levels through Aug. 31. Programs include orchestra, mariachi, choir, band and guitar, and financial aid is available.
