SAN BERNARDINO — The Cal State San Bernardino women’s volleyball team had already clinched no worse than a share of the CCAA regular-season championship, but the Yotes still had an outright title at stake Saturday night against Sonoma State.

It was the third meeting, with the first two coming in a six-day span in September and Sonoma State winning both at home.

Flash forward two months, and Sonoma State completed a regular-season sweep of the Yotes on Saturday at Coussoulis Arena, earning a five-set win by scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 12-25 and 15-11. Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State LA will share the regular-season title, with the Yotes (22-4, 15-3 in CCAA) earning the conference tournament’s No. 1 seed via a tiebreaker.

“We were under our averages in key areas, and we just don’t have that kind of wiggle room,” Cal State San Bernardino coach Kim Cherniss said. “Sonoma State, for whatever reason, causes us match-up problems that we’ll have to figure out over the next few days because there could be a Round 4 next Friday.”

Brooklyn Jackson’s kill gave the Seawolves a 13-8 lead halfway through the first frame. CSUSB rallied to tie the score at 18 on a Jenna Patton service ace and two kills from Trinity Sheridan. A Sonoma State attacking error gave the Yotes an opening-set win.

“Trinity is really young and we lean on her pretty heavily,” Cherniss said of Sheridan, who was averaging 3.86 kills per set going into Saturday’s might. “She’s done a great job with the load she’s been asked to carry for us offensively as a freshman.”

Another kill from Jackson gave the Seawolves a 14-8 lead in set two. Sheridan’s kill brought the Yotes’ deficit to three points at 20-17, but they got no closer. Jen Trephan’s kill along with a combination block from Kiana Richardson and Emily Hernandez gave the Sonoma State a 15-6 lead in third set. Ashley Robinson’s kill got the Yotes within five points at 19-14, but they again got no closer and fell on another kill from Trephan.

In the fourth set, CSUSB jumped out to a 13-6 lead with two aces from Kacie Pedersen and an attack erroring by Hernandez. Back-to-back combination blocks from Jenna Patton and Marlee Nunley gave the Yotes a 16-6 lead, and two consecutive kills from Sheridan and a Seawolves’ hitting error sent the match to the decisive fifth set.

Sonoma State (17-8, 12-6) jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a solo block from Kiana Richardson and and ace by Kaden Young. The Yotes closed the deficit to 10-8 following a solo block by Patton and 12-10 after a kill by Robinson. Sonoma State regrouped and the match ended on  Jackson’s 18th kill of the night.

Sheridan finished with 12 kills for CSUSB, while Robinson had 16 more to lead the Yotes offense. Marlee Nunley recorded 35 assists in defeat. Trephan and Richardson added 12 and 10 kills, respectively, for Sonoma State. Trephan also had 31 assists.

The CCAA tournament will be hosted by Cal State LA from Thursday to Saturday (Nov. 16-18) with the championship scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. Cal State San Bernardino has a first-round bye and will face Sonoma State or Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
