The Alvord school board has temporarily replaced outgoing Superintendent Resma Byrne with a retired school administrator.
In a closed session meeting Monday morning, March 24, the Alvord Unified School District board unanimously approved the hiring of Lisa Simon as interim superintendent. Simon retired in June as deputy superintendent of educational services for the neighboring Corona-Norco Unified School District.

The board met in closed session for more than two hours and emerged to make a brief announcement of the decision. Alvord board members did not comment and referred questions to Kerri McNally, an attorney for the district.

Details of Simon’s contract are still being negotiated, McNally said.
Byrne, who was let go by the board in closed session Thursday, March 20, will leave the district Friday, April 11, two weeks shy of the one-year anniversary of the announcement of her promotion. Though named Alvord’s superintendent in April 2024, Byrne, who had been an assistant superintendent in the district, took over from Allan Mucerino in July.
The board unanimously voted Thursday to release Byrne for “no cause,” McNally said Monday in an email.
The board has been vague about its reasoning for removing Byrne. A Friday, March 21, news release did not detail the circumstances around her departure. In a Saturday, March 22, email, school board President Georgina Ramirez wrote that the board “voted to release the Superintendent from her employment contract for no cause.”
The board will begin searching for a new superintendent and plans to have a replacement for the 2025-26 school year, McNally said.
Alvord runs schools in western Riverside, nearby unincorporated areas and a piece of northeast Corona. Its district office is in Corona.
