SAN BERNARDINO — Cajon football coach Nick Rogers will take the win but he’s not happy about it.
The Cowboys jumped to a big early lead but did not score in the second half of a 31-16 road win over Aquinas in a nonleague game Thursday night.
“We jumped out and played a really good first half, executed extremely well, but then we lost focus going into the second half,” Rogers said.
Evan Powell was 8 of 11 for 160 yards as Cajon (3-0) scored on each of its four first-half possessions but were held scoreless over the final 24 minutes.
“We have to get better and we have to learn how to finish games and not make dumb mistakes,” Rogers said.
The Cowboys scored on the first play from scrimmage, with Evan Powell connecting with Bjorn Birmingham for an 80-yard touchdown and an quick lead.
“That keeps freaking happening to us,” Aquinas coach Jordan Brusig said. “We can’t seem to start a game without someone scoring on us.”
Cajon’s quarterbacks were a perfect 6 of 6 in the first half, but Powell was just 4 of 7 in the second half and Izaiah Holley was intercepted.
Jojo Solis set season highs with 29 carries for 189 yards and one touchdown for Aquinas (1-3), which lost its two top quarterbacks to injury and was forced to run a wildcat offense in the second half.
“We just gave our guys the ball that need the ball, relied on our offensive line and played good defense,” Brusig said.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard with a 37-yard field goal from Yaqiym Halliburton but were pushed back time and again by Cajon’s defense until finally gaining some traction on offense.
“We had a great second half,” Brusig said. “It’s not the outcome we want but you can’t spot Cajon 24 points.”
Solis scored to cap a 13-play drive, but both Charlie Reyes (elbow) and Junior Dennis (shoulder) left the game in the first half.
Halliburton added the only touchdown of the second half and finished with nine yards on 11 carries out of the wildcat formation.
