Chris Mitchell scored a game-high 25 points in leading the Cal State San Bernardino men’s basketball team to a 74-67 victory over Azusa Pacific in the NCAA Division II West Regional championship game Monday night at Cal State L.A.’s University Gym.

The Coyotes (26-7) advanced to the Division II Elite Eight, which begins Tuesday, March 26, at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ill. This marks the fifth time the program has won the West Regional (also 1999, 2002, 2007 and 2023). Cal State San Bernardino reached the national semifinals last season, falling to eventual champion Nova Southeastern.

Mitchell led the way offensively, but the Coyotes had three other players score in double figures: Sedrick Altman (15), Evan Guillory (10) and Jalen Flanagan (10). LeAndrew Knight had seven rebounds, and Altman blocked three shots.

Azusa Pacific, which upset top-seeded Cal State L.A. in the first round, grabbed an 8-6 lead 4 1/2 minutes into Monday’s game, but Cal State San Bernardino pieced together a 27-9 over the next 10 1/2 minutes to take control. Altman, who graduated from Colony High School in Ontario, got that run started with a 3-pointer. Bryce Mitchell drained another 3-pointer to make it a double-digit lead and Chris Mitchell hit a jumper to put the Coyotes up 33-17 with 4:58 left in the half.

The No. 2-seeded Coyotes nearly watched that lead completely disappear, however. Azusa Pacific (16-17) got within nine at halftime, and the Cougars continued to chip at the deficit until they only trailed 63-61 with 3:55 left in the game.

But Cal State San Bernardino used a 7-0 run over the next 3 minutes to regain control and seal the win. Chris Mitchell scored on a layup, and Knight followed with a jumper. Altman capped the final run with his second 3-pointer of the game.

Chris Mitchell was selected the West Regional’s Most Valuable Player, and Guillory made the all-tournament team.

Azusa Pacific also had four players score in double figures Monday night. George Reid led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds. Ethan Speaker and Bryce Sloan each scored 13 points, while Bryce Sloan added 11 more points. Centennial High School graduate Allan McBride had six rebounds for the Cougars.

The seven other regional championship game are scheduled to be played Tuesday. Cal State San Bernardino will find out its seeding and opponent for the Elite Eight on Wednesday.
