But whenever things were on the verge of slipping away from the Lancers, Chloe Webb calmly stepped up and helped maintained order.
Webb, a senior guard from San Diego, finished with a career-high 29 points and made it a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds to lead California Baptist to a 82-71 nonconference victory over Long Beach State in the Lancers’ home opener at the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center.
“She just finds a way to make those big plays on a regular basis,” Lancers coach Jarrod Olson said about Webb’s penchant for making shots at clutch moments. “She’s extremely competitive, so that’s not a surprise by any means. We’re really happy she’s on our side.”
Long Beach State (2-1) carved out small leads in the first quarter, but Webb knocked down her first 3-pointer of the night to level the score at 13 with 2:49 left in period. She sank a pair of free throws about a minute later to give the Lancers their first lead of the game.
Both teams struggled with turnovers in the first half, and there also was a high amount of whistles throughout the game (combined 49 personal fouls).
“It was a bit of a hot mess at the beginning, but we just tried to keep doing the things that were working best for us,” Olson said.
Grace Schmidt scored six points in the second period, as the Lancers (3-0) extended their advantage to 40-30 at the halftime break.
California Baptist (3-0) opened the second half with a 14-4 run, with Webb and Schmidt accounting for all 14 of the Lancers’ points in that key stretch.
“I think we started moving the ball much better at the end of the second quarter, and we were were able to maintain that through the third quarter,” Olson said. “The ball was really popping around the court, and things always look better when somebody makes the shot at the end.”
Long Beach State battled back and cut the deficit to 68-46 with 34 seconds remaining in the third period, but Nhug Bosch Duran sank a 3-pointer at the other end to give California Baptist some momentum going into the final quarter. Kinsley Barrington and Anaiyah Tu’ua nailed shots from behind the arc on back-to-back possession to start the fourth period and push the Lancers’ lead back to 20 points.
The Beach did not go away quietly, however. Patricia Chung drained a 3-pointer that sparked an 11-2 run Long Beach State and trimmed the deficit to 71-60 with 4:12 remaining in the game. The Lancers were clinging to a 74-64 lead when Webb sank her fifth and final 3-pointer from the corner.
“We knew Long Beach State was going to keep pushing until the end, so I just knew I had to step up and make those big plays when I had the chance.” said Webb, who scored 17 of her points in the second half. “With all the charging fouls that were being called, I just had to slow my pace down a little bit.”
Webb also pulled down two defensive rebounds in the final minute of the game to make sure The Beach did not get second chances .
“It got a little hairy at times, but we still were able to hang on,” Olson said. “We still won the game by 11, so it wasn’t like there was real danger of letting it completely get away from us. Long Beach has a strong history, and I am pretty happy that we were able to come away with the win.”
Schmidt registered 15 points and eight rebounds, and Bosch Duran added 13 points (7 for 7 at the line) off the bench for the Lancers. Barrington finished the game with nine rebounds, and North High School graduate Nae Nae Calhoun had seven points and seven assists.
Cheyenne Givens and Chung scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, to lead Long Beach State, and Paloma Valley graduate Sydney Woodley added eight points and seven rebounds despite missing most of the third quarter because of foul trouble.
California Baptist returns to action Saturday night when they host UTEP (3-0).
