The weeklong closure of a major Temecula freeway on-ramp has been canceled.
The Rancho California Road northbound on-ramp to the 15 Freeway was scheduled to shut Monday, June 23, while crews worked on a project known as the “smart freeway” initiative.

The on-ramp, used by vehicles moving west on Rancho California Road, was to have fully closed at 9 p.m. and reopened at 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 1.
But a Friday afternoon, June 20, announcement from the Riverside County Transportation Commission reported the closure was postponed “due to unforeseen circumstances.”
It will be “rescheduled for a future date,” which the announcement did not give.
Workers will extend a second lane of the on-ramp to create a pocket lane for emergency vehicle, the commission reported. The on-ramp also is being realigned.
Construction of the “smart freeway” effort began in January. The approximately $33.5 million pilot project will use technology — such as sensors and ramp meters — to regulate when traffic enters the 15 Freeway to fight congestion. It will do so along an 8-mile stretch from the Riverside County-San Diego County line to the split of the 15 and 215 Freeway in Murrieta.
Later, a similar closure will be needed for work on the northbound 15 loop on-ramp used by traffic heading east on Rancho California Road in Temecula, according to the commission.
