MORENO VALLEY — Valley View football coach Eric Martinez didn’t look when Efrain Dominguez stepped onto the field to attempt a 30-yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining on the clock.

Martinez opted to let the sounds tell the story.

What Martinez heard were sounds of celebration as Dominguez converted the kick to give the Eagles the lead.

When Joseph Ward fell on a loose football on the ensuing kickoff, those sounds turned to sights of celebration as Valley View defeated Baldwin Park 20-18 in the CIF Southern Section Division 11 championship game Saturday night.

The victory marks Valley View’s first section football championship since winning the Division 1 title in 2016.

“They jumped on us pretty quickly but our kids really settled into the game and just kept fighting until that clock struck zeros,” said Martinez, who is in his second year in charge of the program. “They got a little morsel of postseason football last year and really put the work in. Tonight is their reward, and I’m so proud of them.”

Baldwin Park scored the game’s first 10 points on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Valentino May to Dah Riyon Vaughn with 8:42 left in the first quarter and a field goal with 10:28 left until halftime.

Valley View got on the scoreboard as Jesse Vega found Damien Randin for a 20-yard touchdown pass, Vega’s 17th passing touchdown of the year. That helped cut the deficit to 10-7 with 4:32 left until halftime.

Vega finished with 208 yards rushing on 28 carries along with that touchdown pass.

“I lost in this game as a freshman at Upland and was so determined to not have that feeling tonight,” Vega said. “We’re going to celebrate this tonight but the job’s not finished and Sunday afternoon it’s eyes focused towards whoever we’ll see in the state playoffs.”

That was the score at intermission as Valley View’s special teams unit blocked a field goal on Baldwin Park’s final series of the first half.

Valley View (9-5) took their first lead of the game with 2:22 left in the third quarter as Vega ran for a 3-yard touchdown to cap a six-play drive.

Facing fourth-and-inches from inside the Baldwin Park 5 with 3:27 left, Martinez chose to kick a field goal that gave Valley View a 17-10 lead. Baldwin Park answered on the next series as May found Elvis Diaz from 35 yards out. The Braves’ 2-point conversion was successful, giving them a 18-17 lead with 1:35 left.

“That field goal block at the half was huge,” Martinez added. “If they get that one it probably changes my play call on the fourth-and-inches because we’re chasing six points instead of three.”

Vega found Noah Neri for a 30-yard completion on third down with 35 seconds left, putting Valley View into field goal range. Dominguez then calmly stepped up and put it through the uprights for the lead and eventual win.

“I knew I had to stay ready in case my number was called down the stretch,” Dominguez said. “I knew what was on the line and was very calm stepping onto the field with such a high-stakes kick coming. This is a great group of guys, and I’m so happy that I got to play a part in this title run.”
