Europe will work with Ukraine to draw up a plan to “stop the fighting” with Russia before presenting a blueprint for peace to US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Sunday.
Starmer, speaking on the BBC, said: “We have agreed that the UK, along with France and possibly one or two others, will work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting. Then we will discuss that plan with the US.”
His comments came as 19 national leaders gathered for a summit in London to devise a plan to support Ukraine after the disastrous White House meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump on Friday.
The mainly European discussion also included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan. Most of the meeting is being held behind closed doors with a press conference expected later on Sunday afternoon.
In the US, national security adviser Mike Waltz said Russia would have to make concessions on Ukraine’s security in exchange for compromises on territory in any deal to end its war with Ukraine.
“This war needs to end, and that’s going to take concessions on territory. That’s going to take Russian concessions on security guarantees,” Waltz told CNN.
