The Hillcrest and Valley View football teams claimed CIF Southern Section championships this past Saturday evening.
And now the two Sunbelt League squads will look to add CIF State regional championship plaques to the trophy case this week.
Hillcrest made history last week, becoming the first Alvord Unified School District football team to win a section title after beating Tahquitz 63-34 in the Division 10 championship game. The Trojans extended their winning streak to five games.
Hillcrest (9-5) squares off against Irvine Beckman (11-3) in the CIF State’s Division 4A regional championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Tustin High School. Beckman pulled out a 30-24 overtime victory over Brea Olinda in the Southern Section Division 8 championship game. The Patriots bring a 10-game winning streak into Saturday evening’s regional final.
Valley View captured the program’s second Southern Section championship with a 20-18 victory over Baldwin Park in the Division 11 championship game. This marks the program’s second appearance in the CIF State playoffs. Valley View beat San Gorgonio 31-14 in the Division 5AA regional final in 2016 but lost to Oakland Bishop O’Dowd 43-24 in the state championship game.
The Eagles (9-5) will make the journey to Valley Center (7-6) for this year’s Division 6AA regional championship game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Valley Center won the San Diego Section’s Division 4 title with a 21-14 victory over Chula Vista Eastlake.
Santa Margarita (10-3) and Concord De La Salle (12-0) will square off for this year’s CIF State Open Division championship on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 8 p.m. at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
