La Sierra University will begin the holiday season with three events open to the public the first week of December — a Christmas tree lighting festival, a jazz concert and the annual Candlelight Concert.
The Christmas tree lighting event will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Glory of God’s Grace sculpture plaza near the front of the Riverside campus. In addition to the lighting of the campus Christmas tree, the festival includes musical performances, free food, games and other family activities, according to a news release.
Also on Thursday, La Sierra University’s professional Pierce Street Jazz series will present recording artist Ron Stout on trumpet in a 7 p.m. concert in the Troesh Conference Center of the university’s Zapara School of Business.
Performing with Stout will be band members Henry “the Skipper” Franklin, bass, an NAACP Image Award winner; Theo Saunders, piano; and former “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” band member Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums, according to the news release.
Admission is free.
The La Sierra University music department’s 78th annual Candlelight Concert, featuring the university’s choirs, orchestra and brass ensembles, is 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the La Sierra University Church, 4937 Sierra Vista Ave., Riverside.
The program also features pianist Jonathan Mamora, the university’s director of keyboard studies, and a carol sing-along.
