Mater Dei, Edison, Laguna Hills, Capistrano Valley and Western win Week 5 games – Orange County Register

Mater Dei’s football team scored two defensive touchdowns in a 20-7 victory over St. Frances Academy of Baltimore, Md., on Friday.

Outside linebacker Nasir Wyatt returned a fumble about 40 yards for a score in the opening half and Chuck McDonald returned an interception about 35 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give Mater Dei (5-0) the lead for good.

Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in the nation in multiple polls, led 7-0 at halftime but was tied 7-7 against St. Frances (1-5) in the third period until McDonald’s interception.

Wyatt, a first-team All-County selection last season, also recorded four sacks.

Stanford-committed quarterback Elijah Brown scored on a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cap Mater Dei’s scoring. The PAT was blocked.

St. Frances lost earlier this season at St. John Bosco 37-14.

Mater Dei opens the Trinity League against Servite at Santa Ana Stadium on Friday, Sept. 29.

In other games Friday:

Edison 21, Wilcox of Santa Clara 7: The Chargers (2-3), in their fourth road game, scored all of their points before halftime at Bakersfield College.

“Defense played great against a tough offense to prepare for,” Edison coach Jeff Grady said of Wilcox (2-2), which ran the veer.

Junior Julius Gillick rushed for 106 yards and one score and Jacob Martin caught two TDs to lead the Chargers’ offense.

Edison opens the Sunset League against Corona del Mar at Huntington Beach High on Friday, Sept. 29.

Laguna Hills 42, University 14: Ben Trocchio and Justin Skala each threw two touchdowns and linebacker Ryder Simmons returned an interception 70 yards for a score as the host Hawks (6-0) extended their Southern Section-leading winning streak to 14 games.

Laguna Hills takes its bye next week before playing host to Woodbridge on Oct. 6.

Western 35, Garden Grove 0: Anthony Luna completed 18 of 20 passes for 301 yards and two TDs and Malachi Alatorre recorded 11 tackles as the visiting Pioneers (4-1) posted their first shutout.

Junior Julian Amezcua led Western’s wide receivers with eight catches for 149 yards and two TDs.

El Toro 35, Pacifica 0: Sebastian Robles and Josh Quitugua each recorded two sacks as the host Chargers (2-4) bounced back from a lopsided loss against Capistrano Valley to blank the visiting Mariners (1-4).

Jake Peralta added eight tackles for El Toro, which plays at Camarillo (2-3) on Sept. 29.

Westminster 27, Cerritos 0: Jared Salud racked up 16 total tackles, Ezekiel Cedillo had 10 tackles and forced a fumble, and Thong Danh recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass as the host Lions (4-2) recorded their four shutout.

Buena Park 56, Magnolia 0: Senior Anthony Irons rushed for two touchdowns, caught a 55-yard score and intercepted a pass to lead the visiting Coyotes (4-1) at Western High.

Buena Park opens the Freeway League at La Habra (4-1) on Sept. 29.

Capistrano Valley 23, Barstow 12: Quarterback Tommy Acosta ran for two touchdowns for the Cougars in a road win over Barstow.

Dylan Fingersh made three field goals for Capo Valley (6-0). Jackson Sievers had over 20 tackles according to coach Sean Curtis.

Jack Schwenn had an interception for the Cougars and Sean Shively forced a fumble. The interception was the third of the season for Schwenn.

Laguna Beach 75, Lakeside 12: Jackson Kollock completed 19 of 21 passes for 373 yards with seven touchdowns for Laguna Beach in a home win over Lakeside.

All of Kollock’s passes were in the first half. Nick Rogers had a kick return touchdown for Laguna Beach (4-1).

Portola 20, Woodbridge 0: Portola ran for over 200 yards in a shutout win over Woodbridge.

Marcus Sung ran for over 140 yards with a 50-yard touchdown run. Kamran Jahromi had a 70-yard touchdown run and an interception for Portola (4-2).

Woodbridge (1-5) has lost four consecutive games and has been shutout in two of its last three games. Tatum Ramos led the team in rushing and had five receptions.

Dana Hills 47, Canyon 14: Noah Kucera had four touchdowns for Dana Hills in a rout of Canyon.

The senior set a school-record for receiving yards in a game last week against Woodbridge and followed that with three rushing touchdowns and an interception return for a touchdown. Sophomore Radley Geiss had three rushing touchdowns for Dana Hills (4-2).

Corin Rynders threw for 164 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Canyon (1-4).

Crean Lutheran 44, Gahr 7: Crean Lutheran ran for 255 yards in a road win over Gahr.

Justin Dominguez led the Saints rushing attack with 97 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Jones recovered a fumble and returned it 36 yards for a Crean Lutheran (4-1) touchdown.

Josiah Mora led the defense with six tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Santiago 39, Gabrielino 6: Santiago scored 24 points in the second quarter to jump out to a big lead on Gabrielino.

The Cavaliers had seven sacks with Frankie Maldonado and Taquini Leuta contributing two each. Elysha Grijalva had an interception for Santiago (3-2).

Larry Bravo and Mario Carbajal had touchdowns for the Cavaliers who open Garden Grove League play against Rancho Alamitos next week.

Santa Ana 40, Estancia 6: Santa Ana ran for 274 yards with three touchdowns in a rout of Estancia in the Orange Coast League.

Charles Hughes led the Saints with 145 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Sergio Torres threw for 142 yards with four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing. Adrian Sanchez had two touchdown receptions for Santa Ana (4-2, 2-0).

Quarterback Riley Witte ran for the lone touchdown for Estancia (3-2, 0-1).
