New scholarships worth up to $25,000 a year will be available in spring for La Sierra University students thanks to a new partnership.

The Seventh-day Adventist university in Riverside and the Marymount Education Foundation have joined to create the Marymount Scholars Program.

The awards are for incoming La Sierra students who finished high school with a B average and are from disadvantaged backgrounds, a university news release states. They’re aimed at students who are the first in their families to go to college, according to the release. Up to six will be given each year.

The nonprofit foundation was created to carry on Marymount California University’s mission after the private Catholic university in Rancho Palos Verdes closed in 2022.

La Sierra University President Christon Arthur said in the release that first-generation and underprivileged students face challenges.

“Every student we see we ask, ‘What is God imagining for that student?’” he said in the release. “‘And how do I make God’s imagination become a reality?’”

Brian W.G. Marcotte, the foundation board’s treasurer and former Marymount president, said in the release that the program seeks students “with high need, and (who) have very high potential.”

The scholarships can be renewed for up to four years for incoming freshmen and for up to two years for incoming transfer students if they remain eligible.
