The name of a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty will mark a stretch of the 15 Freeway running through Lake Elsinore.
The state legislature passed a resolution designating the portion of the 15 between Central Avenue and North Main Street as Deputy Darnell Andrew Calhoun Memorial Highway, state Sen. Kelly Seyarto’s office announced Thursday, Sept. 28.
“I was fortunate enough to know Deputy Calhoun personally through his work in our community,” Seyarto, R-Murrieta, who represents Lake Elsinore, said in a news release.
“He was the epitome of a public servant and I am honored and humbled to be able to recognize him in this way, so we never forget the sacrifice he made to keep our district safe.”
Calhoun, 30, was shot and killed Jan. 13 while responding to a domestic violence call in the unincorporated community of Lakeland Village.
The alleged gunman, Jesse Ceazar Navarro, is charged with first-degree murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. Authorities said Navarro shot Calhoun as the deputy approached his home, got in a truck and got back out to shoot Calhoun again before a second deputy arrived and shot Navarro.
Born in Pomona and raised in Murrieta — his family owns a barbecue restaurant there — Calhoun started his law enforcement career with the San Diego Police Department before joining the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 2022. He was assigned to the sheriff’s Lake Elsinore station.
Calhoun married his high school sweetheart in 2017. He is survived by his wife and three sons, among others.
