Maternal health and quality of care are sensitive topics in the Inland Empire, with maternal death rates rising for certain ethnic groups, leaving many asking for improvements and innovation.

Maternal patients in the region face unique challenges — some traveling great distances for care and others facing a scarcity of practitioners — contributing to the medical dilemma.

In 2022 and 2023, maternal death rates among Black women increased nationally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared to rates among White women, which decreased.

Access to care has been a hurdle for Inland patients as labor and delivery wards have continued to close, as they have at Hemet Global Medical Center and San Dimas Hospital.
