Riverside city leaders have approved a $3.3 million contract to design a new police headquarters.
The City Council unanimously approved the contract at its meeting Tuesday, July 1, bringing the total estimated budget for the project to nearly $59.5 million — if the city is able to break ground in one year.
The initial plan was to break ground in two years, City Manager Mike Futrell said at the meeting, but it was reduced to one in an effort to keep construction costs low and use Measure Z funding. Measure Z increased the city’s sales tax rate by 1% and funds public safety vehicles and building construction, according to the city.
“This building doesn’t even qualify to be the cave in ‘The Flintstones’ movie,” Councilmember Jim Perry said at the meeting. “It needs to go as quickly as possible.”
The current police headquarters, located at 4102 Orange St., was built in 1963. The facility is outdated and does not support an efficient work environment, according to the Police Department.
The city’s contract with Palm Desert-based Holt Architects Inc., approved Tuesday, covers the design of the headquarters project.
Construction is slated to start in July 2026.
