
The San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball team has assumed the role of giant killers in recent weeks.
Khemanni Davis recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Wolverines knocked off No. 4-seeded Mt. San Antonio College 87-79 on Saturday evening in Walnut to advance to the 3C2A state tournament.
It marks second straight game San Bernardino Valley College as taken down a higher-seeded team in the postseason. The No. 12-seeded Wolverines defeated No. 5 seed Santiago Canyon College 104-79 in the previous round March 1.
The state tournament will be held at Mt. SAC this coming week. The quarterfinals will be held Thursday night, with the semifinals Saturday and the championship game Sunday. SBVC (26-5) will find out its quarterfinal opponent in the coming days.
SBVC never trailed during Saturday’s regional game at Mt. SAC and held a lead for all but 49 seconds of the contest.
Darius Carr sank a pair of 3-pointers, and Jason Hilliard added five points as the Wolverines opened up a 13-3 lead.
Mt. SAC (25-5) trailed by only seven with 9 minutes remaining in the first half, but SBVC scored 15 consecutive points to extend its lead to 43-21 with 4 1/2 minutes to intermission. Andre Speight drained two 3-pointers to spark that run by the Wolverines.
Shadale Knight sank SBVC’s 10th 3-pointer with 3 seconds on the clock to give the Wolverines a 51-33 halftime lead.
Davis was steady throughout the first half, scoring 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting (including a perfect 4 for 4 from 3-point range).
Mt. SAC made a furious comeback in the second half, and cut the deficit to 78-72 with 2:20 remaining on the clock.
SBVC withstood that charge, however, as Davis, Jason Lee and Benjamin Byrd combined to go 8 for 8 from the free-throw line.
Knight finished with 18 points and five assists, and Hilliard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carr added 17 points for the Wolverines, while Lee registered a game-high six assists.
Jaidyn Simpson and Marvel Chambers scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to lead a balanced attack for Mt. SAC. Jimmy Baker finished with 11 points, and Jon McCullough added 10. Kenneth Brown had a team-high nine boards for the Mounties.
