What’s at stake for UCLA? A loss for UCLA could lead to a potential shakeup within the program. Chip Kelly’s job status remains uncertain beyond this season and the next two games could go a long way in deciding how things play out. The Bruins are also looking to bring the Victory Bell back to Westwood. The teams have exchanged wins at each other’s home field over the past two years. — Williams

What’s at stake for USC? All in-season implications for this game have been extinguished – but big-picture dominoes may fall for both programs. Members of USC’s defensive staff, hired under the now-departed Alex Grinch, may be coaching for their job as head coach Lincoln Riley has said he expects the defense to take a leap this week. There’s a big chance, too, that local fans might be seeing Caleb Williams don a Trojans helmet for the last time if he decides to skip the bowl game and head for the NFL draft. — Evans

Who’s better?: These unranked programs are polar opposites – a struggling UCLA offense meets a struggling USC defense in an intriguing thought experiment. The Bruins’ defense, though, has played at a high level this season and ranks 10th in the nation, allowing just 289.9 yards per game. The defense is led by first-year defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn and edge rusher Laiatu Latu. Lynn was named as a Broyles Award nominee while Latu was named as one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award. They’ll give Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, and a high-powered USC offense a test. — Williams

UCLA matchup to watch: USC’s offensive line vs. UCLA’s front seven. The Bruins will only have success if the defensive front can apply pressure on Caleb Williams and force him to make mistakes. Latu, who has 11 sacks this season, was shut out sack last week against Arizona State. He could see that number increase this week against a vulnerable offensive line that’s allowed Williams to be sacked 29 times this season and surrendered 23 pressures last weekend against Oregon. — Williams

USC matchup to watch: USC receivers Tahj Washington and Brenden Rice vs. UCLA’s cornerbacks. The Bruins have one of the best cornerback duos that USC’s faced all year in Alex Johnson and John Humphrey, who’ve been marvelous this season at keeping plays in front of them; heck, the longest completion any receiver’s managed to get this year against Johnson is a whopping 21 yards. They’ve both, too, allowed less than a 55% completion percentage on targets. If USC’s line is under siege, Washington and Rice need to execute routes and become effective scramblers to give Williams a consistent outlet. — Evans

UCLA wins if: The Bruins must find some offense and match the Trojans’ scoring throughout the game. It remains unclear who will start at quarterback for UCLA, but they must play a mistake-free game and not turn the ball over and give Williams more opportunities to put points on the board. — Williams

USC wins if: The defensive line, largely dormant for weeks, can recapture its early-season form and give UCLA’s quarterback little time to throw. Also, Williams could don a Superman cape and laser through the Bruins’ defense in what could be his final collegiate outing. — Evans

Williams’ prediction: USC 38, UCLA 13. The Bruins will struggle to generate any offense and find the end zone. Williams and the Trojans will take advantage and wear down the Bruins’ defense, which has allowed just 16.4 points per game, and surpass the Bruins’ season-high points allowed of 36 against Oregon State a month ago.

Evans’ prediction: USC 35, UCLA 21. USC’s offense will struggle in the early going with UCLA’s front, then Williams will engage backyard-ball mode.
