Communities across the Inland Empire will celebrate Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, with public altars, music, dance and more in November.

Rooted in Aztec, Mexican and Catholic traditions, the celebrations help people remember and honor family members and friends who have died. Though Día de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated Nov. 1 and 2, community events are planned throughout the month.

Here’s a list of selected events in the Inland Empire.

Fontana: The city will host two Día de los Muertos celebrations with community altars, face-painting, crafts, performances and more on Saturday, Nov. 1. The first event is 3-6 p.m. at Jack Bulick Center, 16581 Filbert St., and the second is 4-7 p.m. at Southridge Park, 14501 Live Oak Ave. Information: 909-349-6900

Menifee: Highlights of the Día de los Muertos celebration at Mt. San Jacinto College include a Catrina contest, live performances, a vintage car display, activities for kids and more. Residents can bring photos of loved ones to add to a community altar at the event, which runs 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the college, 28237 La Piedra Road. Moreno Valley: Altar displays, live entertainment plus a beer and Michelada garden and artists booth will be featured at the Day of the Dead celebration from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Moreno Valley Civic Amphitheater, 14075 Frederick St. Information: moval.org/dayofthedead

Ontario: The Ontario Museum of History & Art and the city offer several activities to celebrate Día de los Muertos, beginning with the museum’s “Día de los Muertos: Celebrating Artistic Journeys” exhibit on display through Sunday, Nov. 2. A community altar has been established at the Jack Mercer Community Bandstand on Euclid Avenue and C Street and is available for viewing ahead of the annual community celebration featuring live performances, face-painting, food and a community procession from 3-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. Information: ontariomuseum.org

Pomona: The Downtown Pomona District presents its annual “Downtown Hasta La Muerte,” a Day of the Dead celebration in partnership with the Pomona Chamber of Commerce, featuring art galleries, a car show, music and more 5-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, on Second Street in downtown Pomona. Information: downtownpomona.org/hastalamuerte

Redlands: A teen art contest, face-painting and crafts, live performances and more are planned for the Dia de Los Muertos celebration 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Smiley Park, located behind A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St. Free books for children and a free taco lunch will be provided while supplies last. Riverside: The city is hosting its first two-day Day of the Dead celebration with art, Aztec dancers, ofrenda altars, food, a Catrina pageant, live music and more 1-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, on Market Street between University Avenue and 14th Street.
